Frequently Asked Questions

GENERAL QUESTIONS

Do I need to be home when you service my residential property?

As long as our team can access your property (no locked gates) and there are no animals in the yard, you don’t need to be home when we service your property.

I have a dog and locked gate. Will you call to let me know when you will be coming to my property?

At the time of booking your service appointment, we will ask you if you have in-ground sprinklers, locked gates and animals. If you do, then we will make a note to “call ahead” before visiting your property. Although we cannot let you know exactly what time we will be at your property, we can let you know what day we will be coming, weather allowing.

I had a call yesterday that my property would be serviced today, but it's raining. Will the appointment be rescheduled for the next day?

If weather conditions interfere (strong winds or heavy rain) then your application may be delayed until the next good day, weather permitting. We don’t apply applications to residential properties on Saturdays. If you had a call saying we would be there on Friday, we will reschedule for Monday so your family can enjoy your property on the weekend without interruption.

It rained after an application was applied to my lawn. Will you return to redo the service?

Please call your local office if you have any questions on this as it depends on what services you had done, length of rainfall and how long it was after the product was applied.

How long will it take for the weed control to start working after it is applied?

Within 2 to 3 days you should start seeing results of the application (weeds will start dying).  After 7 to 10 days, if the weeds don’t appear to be under control, please contact us and we will check back on your site.  For lawns with an excessive amount of weeds, it may take multiple applications to get them under control.

Do you have a referral program?

Yes, we do, it is called ESPS Bucks. If you refer someone who purchases our service, we will give you a $20.00 coupon to use at face value toward any of our services at any time throughout the year, even with renewals. It’s that easy and there is no limit on the number of ESPS Bucks that you can receive!

Will you automatically renew my services from year to year or do I need to rebook?

We don’t automatically renew your services each year. You need to rebook.

Do you offer environmentally friendly organic fertilizers?

Yes, we offer an organic fertilizer through our sister company, Earth Smart Solutions.  It is formulated with complex carbohydrates, macro and micro nutrients, amino acids, enzymes, proteins, vitamins, minerals and a variety of natural substances for soil and plant improvement.

What happens if I have a problem with my service?

At Earth Smart, we back each service with our Smart Guarantee. This ensures that you are 100% satisfied with your service. If you ever have a problem with any of our services, feel free to contact us and we will reconcile the problem as soon as possible.

Do you offer environmentally friendly options for these services?

At Earth Smart, we are constantly evaluating our work in order to reduce our environmental impact. We take every initiative possible in order to reduce waste by recycling, reducing paper use, and using energy efficient equipment. We also offer environmentally friendly packages for many of our services whenever possible.

Will you dispose of grass and other debris?

We can dispose of it at our yard at an additional fee. We will also dispose of it properly at your home for free assuming you have yard waste pick-up. We often suggest adding debris to a compost in order to have a nutrient rich fertilizer for the future.

LAWN CARE

How long should I wait, after an application, to water my lawn?

After an application we recommend waiting 6 to 12 hours before watering to allow the treatment to take effect. Please reference your invoice left at your home, for any special instructions. When it is very hot and dry, it is important that you water your lawn the day that you had an application applied to it. If you have any questions, please contact your local office.

What mowing techniques do you recommend?

We recommend the following:

  • Mow your lawn regularly (3 – 4 times per month) depending on growth
  • Height of grass should be 2.5 – 3 inches or  6.25 – 7.50 cm height after cutting
  • Keep your mower blade sharp
  • Never remove more than 1/3 of leaf blade
  • You can leave the grass clippings on the lawn if you are cutting on a regular basis and not leaving more than 1/3 of the leaf blade on the lawn

I have children and pets. How soon after an application can they be allowed on the lawn?

We recommend people and pets stay off the lawn until dry (approximately 1 to 2 hours) and then follow the instructions on your invoice as to watering and cutting.

What is core aeration?

Core Aeration removes small plugs of thatch and soil from the lawn, allowing your lawn to breathe.  These plugs are then left on your lawn to decompose, with the holes filling in within a few weeks, depending on time of year, weather and soil conditions.

Will you dispose of grass and other debris?

We can dispose of it at our yard at an additional fee. We will also dispose of it properly at your home for free assuming you have yard waste pick-up. We often suggest adding debris to a compost in order to have a nutrient rich fertilizer for the future.

How often should I water my lawn?

We recommend that you:

  • Water your lawn 2.5 cm per week or 1 inch / 1 to 2 hours per area
  • Water in the early morning. It is best to avoid overnight watering.
  • Increase frequency if you encounter dry periods
  • Deep weekly watering encourages deep rooting compared to infrequent sparse watering

TREE SERVICES

Why should my trees and shrubs have deep root fertilizer?

Trees can be deficient in nutrients due to the competition of other trees/shrubs surrounding them. This fertilizer allows nutrients to go directly to the roots for immediate absorption. Doing this improves the overall health and longevity of the tree and supports the trees in the frigid temperatures Alberta sees in winter.

How often is deep root fertilizer recommended per year?

We recommend this type of fertilizer to be done twice per year – once in the spring and once in the fall. This will help keep the tree healthy throughout all seasons.

How does your deep root tree and shrub fertilization work? How soon after this application should we water?

We offer a spring and fall deep root fertilization service. The fertilizer is injected into the soil using a probe to ensure the fertilizer reaches the root zone. After an application it is recommended you give the trees and shrubs a good watering to assist with nutrient uptake.

When is the best time to fertilize my trees and shrubs?

The best time is before and after the winter season, any time between mid April to the end of May and mid September to the end of October.

When is the ideal time to prune?

Pruning can be done year-round.

When do you offer tree trimming and pruning?

We offer tree trimming and pruning between the months of April to October in our Calgary and Red Deer locations. Pruning trees can help alleviate black knot fungus. Read our blog “Black knot fungus – tips on how to control it” to learn more.

Is Earth Smart Property Solutions considered an arborist?

We are not an arborist as we are not specialized in that area. If you are in search of an arborist, we would be more than happy to provide recommendations.

Do you prune trees over 12’ in height?

Good question! We only prune trees that are under or up to 12’ in height. If higher, an arborist is your best option.

What is soil drenching?

Soil drenching is a targeted technique in which we apply a product to the root zone of a plant or tree to improve the trees health. Doing this protects the tree from unwanted pests/insects like birch leaf miners, aphids, and more. If you are interested in learning more about leaf miners, read our blog “Do you have brown spots on your birch tree leaves?”

SNOW REMOVAL

Do I have to sign up for the whole winter or can I sign up for a portion of the season?

Our winter snow removal programs start Nov 1st and end Mar 31st, however we also offer vacation clearing, which you can sign up for, for a portion of the season.  If it is after Nov 1, and you wish to sign up for snow removal to Mar 31st, then we will be able to provide this service as well.  Please contact your local office for more information.

If I sign up for snow removal services, when do they begin?

Snow removal services will typically begin November 1st and end on Mar 31st.

If my circumstances change and I have to cancel my snow removal services, how much notice do I need to give to cancel?

Typically our winter snow removal programs run from Nov 1 to Mar 31. However if circumstances change and you need to cancel services (moving/change of address, illness or some other unforeseen circumstance), give your local office a call.

Do you take cash for payment?

In order to book snow removal services, we require a credit card to put on file. This is required in case of late or missed payment.  However, you can pay with cheque, credit card or e-transfer. Invoices are due at the end of each month after services have been completed.

What if I sign up for monthly snow removal services and there is little or no snow? Do I get a discount?

No, all of our crews are kept on standby via a salary wage. Therefore, we do not offer discounts if there is little or no snow during a specific month of your contract.

If I book a program, during a snowfall event, with continuous snow fall, how many times will your crew visit our property?

During a continuous snow fall, our crews will visit your site once per day. If snow keeps falling after our site visit, they will return the next day.

I don't need my whole driveway cleared. Can you only clear a portion of it?

No, we clear down to the pavement and edge to edge. Also, for liability reasons, we can not just clear a portion of it.

I’m on an acreage – can I sign up for snow removal services?

As long as you live in the areas we service, then yes. We will need to visit your site beforehand to give accurate pricing information and to set up guide markers so our operators can see your property lines during and after a snowfall. If you are wanting a one-time service, our truck/tractor is billed out at an hourly rate. Please contact us for more information.

What is a snow event?

A snow event is a period of continuous snow fall over a prolonged period (ie it snows all day or for 1-2 days in a row)

If I book a monthly snow removal program, does it cover clearing snow drifts on the sidewalk?

Yes, our monthly programs include clearing drifts off your sidewalks, etc (depending on which program is booked). However, if you notice that your sidewalk needs clearing and our Team didn’t come out that day, then contact our office and we will do a Service Call to clean your sidewalks, etc (depending on which program is booked).

What is your snow removal service area?

We are offering snow and ice removal services in the following areas for Winter 2024/2025:

  • Central Alberta:  Blackfalds, Penhold, Red Deer, Springbrook and Sylvan Lake areas

Please note that spaces are limited. Contact your local office to check availability.
