8 Myths and Facts on Snow Removal Bylaws

Myth #1: You don’t need to shovel snow off your sidewalk 24 hours after a snowfall in Calgary.

FACT: You do need to shovel snow off your property within 24 hours after a snow event in Calgary. (Source: City of Calgary) Not doing so could put yourself at risk of a ticket.

Myth #2: In Red Deer County, there is no bylaw about clearing snow off your sidewalk.

FACT: There is a bylaw for Red Deer too, as of September 2016, (Bylaw No. 2016/22, Section 8A.1) Property owners must shovel snow off their property within 48 hours of a snowfall event. (Source: Red Deer County Road Protection and Traffic Control Bylaw)

Myth #3: You are allowed to shovel snow from your property onto the adjacent street in Calgary.

FACT: No, you are not allowed to do this. Any snow on your property (driveway or sidewalk) has to be piled on your property.

Myth #4: City workers in Calgary will shovel the snow off your property if you don’t at no cost.

FACT: If you do not shovel the snow off, the city road department will shovel your snow at a minimum flat rate of $150 + GST plus charge an administration fee. (Source: City of Calgary) Yikes!

Myth #5: Red Deer County doesn’t issue fines for not removing snow off a private property.

FACT: “A notice of offense may be given. As in all other instances, County Peace Officers have the discretion to issue a warning as opposed to a violation tag or ticket.” (Source: Red Deer County)

Myth #6: A first offense fine in Calgary is $100 for not obeying the 24-hour snow clearing bylaw.

FACT: A first offense is actually $250 and that number increases if repeat offenses occur. (Source: City of Calgary)

Myth #7: You are not allowed to put in a complaint with regards to private property snow clearing issues.

FACT: You are allowed in both Calgary and Red Deer. In Calgary, you can register a complaint for a sidewalk not cleared in 24 hours by filling out a form here.

MYTH #8: The bylaw fine for not clearing snow off your property in Red Deer is higher than in Calgary.

FACT: No, the fine is lower. Fines in Red Deer for not clearing snow is $35 but could reach over $100 depending on the size of the property owner’s sidewalk the City would shovel. (Source: City of Red Deer)
