Fall Weed Control
Applying weed control in the fall is extremely effective. Here are 4 reasons why:
1. By applying weed control in the fall, you are striking weeds when they are most vulnerable and they will struggle to survive winter.
2. Fall is an excellent time of year to control perennial weeds.
In the fall, in preparation for winter, perennial broadleaf weeds transport food to their roots from their foliage. Herbicides applied to the foliage will also be delivered to the roots, helping to eliminate the weed.
“Broadleaf herbicides applied in fall will be absorbed by the broadleaf weed’s foliage and transported to the roots along with the carbohydrates, resulting in the destruction of the broadleaf weeds.” (Source: Iowas State University)
“Fall is also an excellent time to control perennial weeds, because that’s the time of year when plants begin a process of winter food storage, shifting internal foodstuffs from leaves to roots. If you treat perennial weeds with herbicide in fall, the chemical moves from leaves to roots, essentially killing the weed at the root.” (Source: Bioadvanced)
3. When you apply weed control to your lawn in the fall, you’ll reach fall-germinating perennial weeds such as dandelion. Perennials such as thistles and dandelions are best controlled from mid September to early October.
4. Fall weed control is also effective for treating annual weeds.
“Fall treatments knock out both annual and perennial weeds and can actually be the key to killing established perennial invaders such as dandelion and clover.” (Source: Bioadvanced)
