Lawn Care

Now that it is officially summer, we felt it was the perfect time to highlight some tips on keeping your lawn looking green and healthy throughout the next few months. Alberta can get some days of hot/dry weather and it is important to take care of your lawn just as you would your garden.

Following are some of our best-chosen tips for a beautiful lawn:

Don’t Over-Mow
  • Although this sounds like common sense it is very true, a lawn should not be mowed every few days. “Many people unwittingly cut their grass far too short with each mow. With each mow, you should only clip about one third of the grass blade. Cutting more than this can create an unhealthy buildup of clippings that take longer to decompose and also stunt growth rates. Allowing your grass to grow longer encourages root growth, enabling the system to reach water deeper in the soil.” (Source: Digital Trends) Plus leaving your grass a bit longer makes it look fuller and healthier than shorter grass. If you are planning a summer getaway as public health restrictions ease and need assistance in mowing your lawn, we offer vacation cuts plus a weekly or bi-weekly mow and trim service. Grasscycle
  • When mowing, don’t collect the grass clippings, let them stay on the fresh cut grass. This is called grasscycling. “Grasscycling returns nutrients to the soil, discourages weeds and keeps moisture. Grass clippings are free fertilizer to help your lawn grow greener” (Source: City Of Calgary).  According to DIY Network, “grass clippings can provide up to 25 percent of your lawn’s fertilizer needs.”
Be Sure to Water
  • Water your lawn regularly. “Regular watering is crucial to maintaining a healthy lawn, and it’s best to water lawns in the early morning. Watering later in the evening should be avoided if possible. Grass left wet overnight can encourage fungal disease growth.” (Digital Trends) Also, keep in mind that mature, established lawns require different watering frequencies than new developing landscape. Fertilize Properly
  • Applying fertilizer to your lawn provides essential nutrients that will help your lawn look healthy and lush. It is important to fertilize, but be careful to not over-fertilize your lawn as it can burn it.
