Have you booked a Lawn Fertilizer and Weed Control Package with Earth Smart Property Solutions?

If so, welcome to spring lawn care season! One of the most common questions we get at this time of year is:
“When can I expect my first application of fertilizer and weed control?”

It’s a great question—because timing matters, especially here in Alberta. The right timing sets the stage for a lush, healthy, weed-free lawn all season long. Applying too early (or too late) can reduce effectiveness and waste your investment.

Here’s how we determine the best time to begin your lawn care program and what you can expect in the weeks ahead.

🌡️ Why Timing Matters in Alberta

Alberta’s unique climate presents challenges you won’t find in many other places.

  • We often have late spring snowfalls and frosty mornings well into May.
  • Soil can stay too cold for fertilizer uptake even when the surface looks ready.
  • And applying weed control products too early—before weeds are actively growing—won’t yield the results you want.

That’s why we don’t just “get started” the moment the snow melts. We time your first application based on science, not the calendar, to give your lawn the best start possible.

🔍 When Do You Usually Start?

We typically begin applications between mid-April and early May, depending on several important factors:

  • Soil temperatures (ideally around 10°C for fertilizer uptake)
  • Weed activity (you’ll see those dandelions start to pop)
  • Weather forecasts (we avoid days with high wind, heavy rain, or frost)

Our goal is to treat your lawn when it’s most effective—not just the earliest possible day.

Factors Which Affect When You Will Receive Your First App

1. 🌱 Condition of Your Yard

Before we apply anything, our team will reach out to ensure your lawn is ready for its first application.

  • If your yard is north-facing or had snow piled in certain areas, it may be slower to melt. We need to be able to see the lawn surface in order to apply products.
  • Yards with southern exposure typically warm up faster and will be treated earlier.
  • We’ll also check whether you’ve completed your spring clean-up—that means removing leaves, debris, and pet waste. If the lawn hasn’t been cleaned, it won’t be ready for treatment.
2. 🌦️ Weather Conditions

Alberta’s spring weather is notoriously unpredictable. We do not apply fertilizer or weed control if:

  • It’s raining or rain is imminent
  • It’s too windy for safe and effective application
  • Temperatures are still too cold for proper product absorption

We monitor the forecast closely to ensure each application is timed for the best possible results.

3. 💼 Lawn Care Package Selected

The package you selected also impacts when you’ll receive your first application:

  • Emerald Lawn Care Package (5 applications + aeration): You’ll be first in line, typically starting in early May.
  • Sapphire Lawn Care Package (4 applications): Expect your first application in May as well.
  • Jade Lawn Care Package (3 applications): Your first application will also occur in May.

Our scheduling ensures that lawns receiving more treatments start earlier in the season.
