Mosquito Control: The City of Red Deer’s Role

By July 15, 2022No Comments

Information provided from the City of Red Deer:

The city of Red Deer’s Mosquito Control program is designed to reduce the population of mosquitoes to a “tolerable level”.

“The City of Red Deer treats nuisance mosquito larval populations with the microbial pesticide called Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti). This pesticide is approved by Health Canada, is non-toxic and has no detrimental effects on animals and humans. Monitoring and control efforts are targeted, keeping our use of pesticides to a minimum.”

Where?

The mosquito program area includes the city of Red Deer and treatment zones beyond the city limits.

When?

The program typically runs from April to August.

For more information on (their) Mosquito Control Program please view the Mosquito Control (pdf) pages from (their) Integrated Pest Management Manual.

According to their Integrated Pest Management Manual:

  • Spring mosquitoes have one generation per year; overwinter as eggs deposited around margins of slough, above the water line in ditches or in depressions in grassy terrain that are subject to flooding due to snowmelt or rainfall
  • Summer mosquitoes can have up to four generations each season; overwinter as mated females eggs hatch only when immersed in warm water
  • Both spring and summer groups go through the following growth stages: egg, four larval instars, pupa and adult
