October in Alberta brings a crispness to the air, as the temperatures begin to dip below zero for the night and our daytime temperatures drop. Cool nights become more regular as we transition between fall and winter.
Fall in Alberta is also a perfect time for hearty hot comfort foods like soups, stews, and casseroles. Plus warm beverages like hot chocolate and tea, while enjoying the comfort of your warm living room.
The signs of fall …. all precursors to the inevitable … dealing with Mother Nature and the snowy months of winter.
Winter brings plenty of snow to Alberta, meaning we are outside shoveling snow a lot! All that shoveling can take a toll on our body’s, especially if not done in a proper and safe manner.
Here are some important things to remember when getting prepped to shovel snow.
- Always stretch and warm up your muscles before grabbing the shovel. Just like warming up before a workout at the gym, you need to do the same for this type of workout. Doing so a few minutes before shoveling will help prevent possible injuries.
- Be cognizant when the snowfall stops and shovel the snow off your property right afterwards. Not doing this allows the snow to stay on the ground for a longer period of time which could make the snow heavier to move (especially if it is a mild temperature outside). There is nothing worse than going to shovel snow that’s turned into dense slush.
- Rather than waiting for the snowfall to stop, consider shoveling as the snow is coming down for faster and safer removal.
- Make sure to bend your knees when shoveling snow. We know this sounds repetitious, but ALWAYS bend with your knees. Your body will thank you and you’ll benefit by saving money by not having to go to the chiropractor!
- You may feel like you have superpowers and do all the shoveling with no breaks in between but make sure to take short breaks. This is needed even more if a large snowfall occurred. Taking a break will let you catch your breath and help you regain your strength. It is also a great opportunity to get a drink of water and grab a snack.
- Use the right type of shovel. Using a shovel that has an ergonomic handle will lessen the risk of injury.
- Apply a generous coat of cooking spray to your shovel blade at the front and back. The cooking spray will prevent the snow from sticking to your shovel, allowing it to easily slide off your shovel, making your snow removal easier.
