While owning a home has many perks, it also comes with assorted duties and responsibilities that property owners must be aware of. Today’s blog looks at the outside of a home, specifically weeds taking hold of either your front yard, backyard, or both.
Weeds are a nuisance, but did you know that failing to deal with weeds can lead to a fine of $400 in the City of Calgary?
According to the City of Calgary:
“owners must ensure that weeds on their property are under control and do not spread to other properties. This includes the area from your property line to the centre of any street or alley. Private property owners must control the growth of noxious weeds and must destroy any prohibited noxious weeds on their property.”
Noxious Weeds
Following is a list of common noxious and prohibited weeds identified in Calgary:
If you have identified a noxious weed in your yard, you must put them in a garbage bag and seal to dispose of to prevent the seeds from spreading, they cannot be composted. (City of Calgary)
Dandelions
Wondering about dandelions and if they are a noxious weed? According to the City of Calgary:
“Dandelions are no longer considered a noxious weed under the Weed Control Act. Bylaw Officers can only issue a warning to property owners if the dandelions are over 15 cm in height.”
If you notice a neighbour’s yard has long weeds and no action is being taken, you can file a complaint by calling 3-1-1 or 403-268-2489 (for areas surrounding Calgary).
