Thatch:

Our Spring Clean Up includes power raking.

Power raking, also known as lawn dethatching, is the process of removing excess dead and decomposing plants from a lawn surface.

A small amount of thatch (approximately ¼ to ½ inch), can improve wear tolerance and surface resiliency, and reduce water loss and soil temperature fluctuations. Thicker layers, particularly beyond an inch, often cause problems for your lawn. Excessive thatch reduces the effectiveness of fertilizers, watering and pest controls and can also provide an optimal habitat for disease and insects.

Maintaining an ideal thickness of thatch is beneficial as it provides organic matter that the growing grass can use as a fertilizer while, at the same time, improving water and nutrient flow for the new shoots.
