Say Goodbye to Unwanted Vegetation with Our Vegetation Control Services

By May 16, 2023No Comments

Are you tired of seeing weeds or unwanted vegetation growing all over your lawn, garden or commercial property? We understand that such overgrowth can be an eyesore, a safety hazard, and may even affect the growth of the plants you actually want. That’s why we offer vegetation control services to help you get rid of these unwanted plants and keep your space looking beautiful and healthy.

Why Get Vegetation Control Services?

We all know how frustrating it can be to have a beautiful lawn or garden that is taken over by weeds and unwanted vegetation. Not only do they ruin the aesthetic appeal of your space, but they also absorb nutrients from the soil that your desired plants need to thrive. This can lead to a decline in their health and slow growth.

Unwanted vegetation can also be a safety hazard in commercial and industrial sites. It’s crucial to have bare ground in case of a fire to prevent the spread of flames, and it’s important to keep ditches clear of vegetation to help drivers spot animals and slow down before crossing the road. We’ve even had a contract with the province to apply vegetation control products along roads to ensure safe driving conditions.

Methods of Vegetation Control

There are a variety of methods that can be used to manage weeds and unwanted vegetation:

1. Preventative Weed Control

Preventative weed control is any control method that aims to prevent weeds from being established such as using certified weed-free seed and ensuring lawn equipment is cleaned before moving from one location to another.

2. Cultural Weed Control

Cultural weed control is any technique that involves creating conditions that prevent or slow down the invasion of weedy species, such as maintaining a healthy lawn, ensuring there are no bare patches and the establishment of competitive and desired vegetation.

3. Mechanical Weed Control

Mechanical weed control uses physical disruption methods, such as pulling, digging, or mowing weeds, to kill or suppress weed growth.

4. Biological Weed Control

Biological weed control uses natural enemies of weed plants to control the germination or spread of established weeds, such as using sheep to control tansy leafy spurge in a field.

5. Chemical Weed Control

Chemical weed control utilizes herbicides to speed up, halt, or alter the weed’s normal growth patterns by either drying it out or causing it to drop its leaves. At Earth Smart Property Solutions, this is our specialty. We’re careful to choose the right product for your specific needs, as the wrong herbicide can ruin plants you actually want in your space.

Types of Chemical Vegetation Control

Vegetation control through herbicide application is often the quickest and most time efficient method of killing and managing weeds.

The type of vegetation control needed depends on the application. It will also vary according to the weed infestation size and plant life cycles

Do you want to kill broadleaf weeds on your grass?

Then a selective herbicide is required.

Do you want to kill weeds and grass growing on your driveway or in your back alley where your garbage cans are?

Then you want a non-selective herbicide that kills everything, grass, broadleaf weeds, as well as all other plants growing. Plus, ideally, you’d like to kill existing weeds and have the weed control penetrate into the ground to prevent additional weeds from growing (residual).

Herbicides fall under these categories:

  • Selective: kills weeds but not grasses
  • Non-Selective: kills all vegetation
  • Residual: kills existing weeds and helps prevents new weeds from coming up. Depending on the product applied the residual effects can vary from a year to 5 years.
  • Non-Residual: kills existing weeds but does not prevent new weeds from coming up

Our Vegetation Management Services

Earth Smart Property Solutions offers the following vegetation management services to help you get rid of unwanted vegetation:

Broadleaf Weed Control:

We use a non-residual, selective herbicide to control hard-to-kill weeds in turf, including dandelions, clover, chickweed, thistle, ivy, and more. We recommend 2-3 treatments per year.

Non-Selective Non-Residual Weed Control:

We use a broad-spectrum weed control herbicide ideal for any unwanted vegetation, including broadleaf weeds and grasses. We recommend 1-2 treatments per year.

Noxious Weed Treatment:

We use a residual, selective, broadleaf herbicide targeting weeds, brush, and trees with no harm to grass. It attaches to organic material in the surface soil layers, reducing surface water runoff, wind erosion or leaching into ground water tables. Requires one treatment per year.

Non-Selective Residual Weed Control:

We use a pre and post-emergent herbicide designed for season-long control of most weeds and grassy weeds. It kills existing weeds and helps prevent new ones from growing, with residual effects lasting from one to five years, depending on the product applied.

We offer hand spraying as well as boon spraying on larger areas.
